About Nell
Nell Curtis Tilton is a New Orleans-based abstract painter whose work is inspired by emotion, movement, and a deep connection to her environment. Raised in a city rich with visual and cultural texture, she brings those layered experiences to life through expressive mixed-media paintings. Her compositions often evolve into structural or architectural forms—an influence from her architect father—yet remain rooted in spontaneity and sensory response.
She studied at Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington, D.C., and later at Newcomb College before completing formal classical training at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts (NOAFA). Nell further expanded her perspective through workshops with acclaimed artists such as Alex Powers, Cheng Khee Chee, Steven Aimone, and Katherine Chang Liu.
Since 2003, she has been a dedicated instructor of Abstract and Experimental Art at NOAFA, where she continues to mentor and inspire adult students. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes personal expression and intuitive process, guiding artists to translate visual and emotional stimuli into abstract form.
Nell’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at the Carol Robinson Gallery such as Wanderings: An Exploration of Different Lands (2023), Rhythms: Earth & Water (2018), and Transformations (2016). Her paintings have also appeared in publications including Professional Artist Magazine, Studio Visit, and New Orleans Homes & Lifestyles.
Drawing from landscapes, architecture, and atmospheric impressions, her work blends vibrant texture, rhythm, and form to create compositions that invite contemplation and emotional connection. Nell continues to explore and evolve her practice, creating art that is both grounded in tradition and driven by the freedom of abstract expression.
